Iconography is the visual images and symbols expected to be seen in the music video or product, such as digipak.

Iconography can also be seen in other music genres, such as hip hop. In these music videos we would expect to see bright flashing lights, to go with the pace of the music as well as females in very little clothing. The mise-en-scene used will also be used to match the atmosphere of a club or bar, the location most likely to play this kind of music. For this reason, the people involved in the video will have a synchronised dance to try to get you in the party mood.

In the indie-folk genre, performance is often seen in the music video. Therefore, as an audience we often see the instruments used, so a common piece of iconography would be the banjo. This instrument would then allow the audience to know that the genre is indie- folk. This is through the use of the instrument in the video as well as it being commonly linked to the countryside. Although, banjos are commonly associated with indie-folk most instruments are commonly linked to the genre.

The iconography seen in rock music videos is very different to the visual images seen in hip hop and indie folk music videos. The lighting in rock music videos tends to be very dark as the lyrics within the song are fairly dark. The costume and hairstyle of the artist will also be very dark. The editing also has a major influence on the pace of the video as in rock videos, the editing can be very quick and sharp. This could relate to the harsh lyrics in some videos.
