Music video analysis- 'Stubborn love, The lumineers

Encoded in a music video is usually a message or story. The overall message encoded in this music video is that a ittle girl's mum and dad go through a divorce. At first the little girl is really upset, however over time she accepts it and becomes happy once again. However, we wouldn't know the story in the video without the encoded messages. We can find these messages in four areas. These are mise-en-scene, editing, sound and camera movements.

Mise-en-scene:

The first piece of mise-en-scene we see is presented through a prop. The prop, a dream catcher, is the sign and what we could perhaps interpret from this is that the person involved isn't happy. Therefore, they want to follow or seek their dreams.

Editing:

This scene also could be signified through the use of editing.Before, the close-up of the dream catcher a close-up of a driving wheel is shown. Therefore, we could interpret that the person behind the wheel needs to leave something to achieve her dreams.

Camera shots & movements:

We can see from this shot that a close-up has been used to signify a message. The close up shows a wedding ring. Therefore, we can imply that that the story behind the song is because of a poor marriage.

Editing:

Later in the song the close-up cuts into another close-up, however this time the wedding ring is being pulled off. This could signify that the marriage is over.

Sound:

We can see that some of lyrics of the song are matched with actions within the video. This agrees with Goodwin's theory that lyrics are matched with the music video. This is seen when the lyric:"When we were young, oh, oh, we did enough" is sung. Whilst this is being sung, we see a young couple kissing. I can imply from this that when the couple were younger they had a strong relationship.

However, in one scene we see the opposite of Goodwin's theory. In this scene as the lyric:" So keep your head up, keep your love" we would expect the little girl to raise her head. However, we see the complete opposite, the little girl lowers her head.
