How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

In my research, I saw that many music videos, digipaks and magazine adverts all synergise to maximise sales. This is because the audience would see the digipak and link it to the music video they have seen or see the magazine advert and link that to a digipak they have seen.

Location

My music video is set in two locations, the forest and the beach. I chose these two locations because I feel that these both link to the genre indie folk. On my digipak I have used two photos. One is the band in the forest and the other is a long shot of the beach huts at Wells beach. I feel the pictures used are very effective because the picture that is on the front of the digipak is the same shot as the chorus in the music video. The second picture on the digipak is a picture of the beach huts that feature in the music video. I also feel that this is effective because there are a couple of scenes that we shot with the beach huts in the background. Despite this not being the exact same shot, it still shows clearly that they are both the same location. On my magazine advert, although I only have one picture on the front I feel it links to the music video and digipak well. The picture on the front of the magazine advert is the exact same picture as the one on the digipak. Therefore, the combination between these two is very effective and the combination between the music video and magazine advert is also effective. This is because the picture on the magazine advert is a shot seen many times throughout the video.

Colours

In my music video, on the scenes where the couple were at the beach I changed the colouring to make it seem warmer and happier. When creating my digipak, I made sure that I did the same for the beach huts picture. This makes it an effective combination because the message encoded in the music video, is also encoded into the digipak.

The picture on the front of the digipak and magazine advert is a picture I edited within Photoshop. I reduced the opacity of the picture to give it an old fashioned look to show the audience it was an indie folk genre. This combination is effective between the two because it creates the same effect, but more both pictures.

On my digipak, I made the background a neutral brown like colour. I did the exact same for the magazine advert, so there is once again an effective combination because the two products look very similar. It also creates an effective combination between these two products as well as the music video. In the music video, the scenes shot in the forest have a lot of brown like colours within them. For example, there are many brown leaves on the trees and floor. This means that the light brown colour of my digipak and magazine advert links to the music video and is fairly effective.

Overall combination

In my research, I noticed that a common convention in digipaks and magazine adverts. This was that the digipak and magazine advert had a strong level of combination to create a brand identity. The audience then see either the magazine advert and link it to the digipak or visa versa.  I feel that I have a strong level of combination between the two products and the music video, which means I have created a brand identity for my product. Therefore, if the audience ever see the band photo or colour used on the digipak or magazine advert, they will automatically connote it to the band. This will help increase sales further in future albums because I will then use the same colours, which the audience will know that the album is produced by The Lumineers.
