Goodwin theory

Andrew Goodwin states that there is a relationship between lyrics and the visuals seen on the music video. Put simply this just means that the shots within the the music match the lyrics of the song. An example of this would be Vance Joy's song ' Riptide' and Ellie Goulding's song 'On my mind'.

He also states that editing is used to match the beat of the song with the change of the different shots. This is to create rhythm within the music video and also control the pace of the music video. A common example of this would be James Arthur's first single 'Impossible'. At roughly, 1:18 in the song the pace of the song increases and we see he shot changing to                                                                                                    every beat. Therefore, total of 9 shots is seen in a two second period.                                                                                                  This creates rhythm throughout the song because when you watch                                                                                                    the video, you want the video to flow and match the beat of the song                                                                                                  because otherwise the beat of the song is lost.
