Audience research

To help with the planning of our music video, we decided to ask our target audience different questions.

From looking at the graph I can see that the questions were answered mainly by females, however we also had a fair few males answer our questionnaire. Therefore, we know that half of our target audience is female and 40% if male. This means that when we plan our music video we need to think about what most females would want as well as thinking about the 40% males.
From looking at the graph I can see that our target audience is between the ages of 16 and 20. However, we did have 2 responses from our teachers who are above the ages of 21. From this we know that the majority of the answers have come from the 16-20 age category.

From looking at the graph I can see that 55% of the people that said they listen to indie folk, have listened to The Lumineers. I can also see that everyone who doesn't listen to indie-folk music, don't listen to The Lumineers as well as 10% of people who either sometimes listen to indie-folk or often listen. A small percentage of our audience, 15%, were unsure on whether they have listened to indie folk. This has had an impact on our planning because we will need to make sure that our video has some relation to The Lumineers.
From looking at the graph I can see that the target audience we chose sometimes listens to indie-folk music. When can also see that 20% often listen to indie-folk music, however 20% have never listened to indie-folk music. Therefore, we will target the audience that sometimes listen to indie-folk and the people who often listen to it.

From looking at the graph I can see that the target audience we chose likes the song. This affects us when planning the video because we know that the audience like the song. Therefore, everything they suggest later on in the questionnaire needs to be done, so the audience like the music video as well as the song. We also need to make sure we target the people that like the song, not the ones that don't.
From looking at the graph I can see that the majority of our target audience, think that 3 people should feature in the film. We can also see that a 1/3 of our target audience think there should be 2 people in the music video. We think we have received this answer because there are 3 members of The Lumineers, therefore the audience would like to see some realism within the video.

From looking at the graph I can see that there was a very equal result. I can see that 1/3 of the audience think that the forest would suit our music video and another 1/3 also think a beach would be an ideal location. As well as this there was an equal split of 20% each that voted for a field or barn. Therefore, when we plan our music video, all four locations will need to be considered.
From looking at the graph I can see that the result from the questionnaire was very close. Although, conceptional music videos were a fan favourite, the vote percentage between narrative videos and performance videos were tight. This affects us when planning our video because now we need to think about adding an aspect of both performance and narrative into our video.

From looking at the table, I can see that instruments were very popular in the questionnaire. On many occasions drums, banjos and guitars were mentioned. Therefore, in our music video we need to add these props in especially with the target audience wanting some performance throughout the video. At the bottom, I can also see that flowers were suggested, therefore we will add this prop in to please the target audience as well as to match Goodwin's theory.
From looking at the graph I can see that Little talks by Monster and Men had the highest percentage of votes. I believe this is mainly due to the fact that their video is fairly random and it intrigues the audience. Stubborn Love was second on the voting, I believe this is because it involves exactly what the audience wanted, a mix of performance and narrative in the video.

What have I learned from this?

The first thing I have learned is that the audience would like to see our music video shot at the beach, therefore shooting the music video at the beach is what we'll do. I also learned that the audience prefer a narrative and performance music video compared to a conceptional video. With a higher percentage of people preferring a narrative video. Therefore, including more narrative shots than performance shots will also be a major factor when filming. I have also learned that the audience want to see props within the video. This is down to the fact that instruments play a big part in the conventions of an indie-folk music video. Another prop we have learned that they want to see is flowers in the woman's hair. This is because the song is called 'flowers in your hair', so using this type of prop will match Goodwin's theory.
