Magazine Adverts analysed
Tom Odell- Long way down

From looking at the music advertisement, I can see that it immediately conforms to the conventions of a magazine advert. Tom Odell has his name printed in large letters in the top left. This is for advertisement purposes, as the bold letting means that you clearing see the artists name first. The positioning of the title also helps the process of the audience first seeing the title. This is because with the title being placed on the left, it is the first thing we read as an audience. This is mainly due to the fact we read from left to right.

Just like the artists name title, the title of the album is also printed in bold lettering and placed on the far left of the poster. I feel this is once again for advertisement reasons, as the audience we see the title first as well as the artist name. We can then relate this two titles together and know that when we see the title name, we know who sings it. It also conforms to the conventions of a music poster, by having the album name on the front.

I can also see from the poster that the image of Tom Odell is in focus, however the background is out of focus. This could then relate to the album title, Long way down. I can then infer from this that the album could be about his life and he is a 'long way down' on the road of his life. I could then infer further that the background image is his home town, that he has left behind, therefore out of his picture. This sort of then conforms to music poster conventions, as if the background is Odell's hometown, it makes the poster personal to him. This is also seen with many indie-folk artists and Ed Sheeran's digipak.

From looking at the music advertisement, I can see that the poster shows his latest achievements as well as the album achievement. This once again conforms to conventions of a typical music poster. Advertising the achievements of the artist as well as the album, will entice the customer to buy the album. This is even if customer doesn't know who Tom Odell is.

Another thing I noticed is that the album release date is printed onto the poster. This is to create a buzz around the album and hopefully increase sales.

Mumford & Sons- Sigh no more

Just like the magazine advert for Tom Odell, this advert conforms to the convention of having the artists name on the front. However, unlike the previous advert, I can see that this time the band name has been printed directly in the centre of the advert. This is to attract the audience to the band name immediately, which will hopefully increase sales of the album.

As well as the band name, the poster also includes the album name. Therefore, this means the poster conforms to another convention. Once again the title is in the centre of the advert. This is to attract people to the album name. When analysing Tom Odell's magazine advert, we can see that they place the album name beneath the artist name. From looking at this music poster, I can see that the have had the same idea.

Another convention of a music poster is having an image of the artist or band. Therefore, we can see that this conforms to another convention. By splitting the band up into 4 individual photos, creates a personal relationship between them and the audience. The setting used gives the audience an insight into the genre of the ban. Setting the images in a countryside field full of wheat and corn, tells us as an audience that it is a indie-folk genre. This is mainly down to the fact that the indie-folk genre originates from the countryside, therefore people link these settings with the genre.

Another feature I notice on magazine article is reviews from different critiques. This advertises the product further to the audience as the audience see that good reviews about the product, they are more likely to purchase it.

However, despite these things conforming to conventions of a normal magazine article, some feature on Mumford and Sons poster don't conform. For example, the poster doesn't include a date. Therefore, the audience that the poster is trying to attract are unable to know when the album is released so they can purchase it. The poster also contains a couple of songs from the album. Although, this isn't a convention for a magazine I believe it is a good idea. This is because sometimes the audience wont notice a band through their image or name, however might recognise one of their major hits.
